The three phases insurers care about
- App off — your personal policy applies as normal
- App on, waiting for a request — the thinnest coverage phase, and where most disputes happen
- On the way to a rider or with a rider in the car — platform coverage is at its broadest
What to ask your insurer
- Does my policy have a ride-hailing or transport rémunéré de personnes endorsement?
- What is covered while the app is on but I have no passenger?
- What is the deductible under platform coverage versus my own policy?
- Does the endorsement change my premium if I also use the car personally?
Why driving uncovered is the worst possible saving
If an insurer determines you were carrying paying passengers without the correct endorsement, a claim can be denied outright — and the vehicle is usually the driver’s single largest asset and their entire income source.
The endorsement is typically a modest monthly add-on relative to that risk. Confirm the exact wording and pricing with your own insurer; policies differ between providers in Quebec.
